Joined 1791 · 14th state · Eastern time
Vermont was an independent republic for fourteen years with its own currency and postal service before it joined, and it still behaves like somewhere that made a choice rather than somewhere that was included. It has no billboards, by law, and more dairy cows than most states have people. Go for the fall colour, which is genuinely as advertised, and for the small producers, cheese and maple and beer, which are a real industry here rather than a gift shop.
