The place

Joined 1896 · 45th state · Not yet a state in the Civil War · Mountain time

Utah was settled by people walking away from persecution who then built an irrigation society in a desert, and that origin still organises the place. It has five national parks in the south, more red rock than anywhere on earth, and Salt Lake City, which is younger and more mixed than outsiders expect. The official state snack is Jell-O and the consumption figures back it up. Go for the parks, but go in spring or autumn, because summer in the canyons is not a joke.

The official state snack is Jell-O, and it eats more of it per head than anywhere else.
