Texas was an independent country for nine years with its own embassies, and has never entirely got over it. It is big enough to hold pine forest, desert, prairie and a subtropical coast, and its cities are among the fastest growing anywhere. Cattle and oil built the mythology, and semiconductors and software pay for it now. Go for Big Bend, which is a long way from everything and the better for it, and eat brisket in a small town rather than a famous one.
The only state that was an independent country with its own embassies abroad.
