South Carolina was the first state to secede and did not wait for anyone to join it, and that self-assurance runs through the place. Charleston is one of the best preserved cities in the country, built on rice and enslaved labour, and the state has been reckoning with that unevenly. The Gullah Geechee culture of the Sea Islands is a direct African inheritance that survived because the islands were isolated. Go for Charleston, but take the time for the barrier islands and the barbecue, which here comes with mustard.
The first state to secede, in December 1860, and it did not wait for anyone else.
