Oregon is split down the middle by the Cascades: a wet, green west of forests and coffee and the coast, and a dry, open east of ranches and high desert that most people never see. It has a coastline that is entirely public by law, all three hundred and sixty miles, which was a deliberate decision in 1967. Go for Crater Lake, the deepest in the country and an unreasonable colour, and drive the coast highway, which was built to be driven slowly.

Pumping your own petrol was illegal for most of a century.
