Oklahoma was Indian Territory before it was a state, and it holds thirty-nine tribal nations, more than anywhere else. That history is not background here, it is the structure of the place, and the Supreme Court affirmed as recently as 2020 that much of the east remains reservation land. The Dust Bowl emptied it and the oil boom refilled it. Go for the Wichita Mountains, where bison range on the plains, and the memorial in Oklahoma City, which is handled with great care.
