New York is a city that everyone knows and a state that almost nobody does, and the state is enormous: the Adirondacks are a park bigger than Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon combined. The Erie Canal made the whole thing possible, turning the city into a port for the entire interior. Go for the city, of course, but take the train up the Hudson, which is one of the great rail journeys, and stop in the Catskills or the Finger Lakes on the way.
