Nevada is mostly federal land and mostly empty, a state of long basins and short mountain ranges that repeat all the way across. Mining built it, gambling rebuilt it, and Las Vegas is only about two per cent of its area. The Great Basin does not drain to any ocean. Go for the Extraterrestrial Highway and Great Basin National Park, which has bristlecone pines that were old when Rome was young, and see Vegas at least once for the sheer nerve of it.
The federal government owns about eighty per cent of the land.
