New Hampshire is small, wooded and stubborn, with no sales tax, no income tax, and a state motto about dying free that it prints on the licence plates made by prisoners. It votes first in the primary by law and will move the date to keep doing so. The White Mountains hold the worst recorded surface weather in the country on Mount Washington. Go in October, which is the reason the roads exist, and take the cog railway up the mountain, running since 1869.
