Nebraska is the only state with a single legislative chamber and the only one where it is officially nonpartisan, a reform pushed through in the 1930s by a senator who thought two chambers were a waste. It is also the Sandhills, twenty thousand square miles of grass-covered dunes that are the largest such formation in the western hemisphere and look like nothing else. Go for the sandhill crane migration in March, when half a million birds stop on the Platte, which is one of the great wildlife spectacles anywhere.
