North Carolina runs from the Outer Banks through the piedmont cities to the highest mountains in the east, and it is really three states with one legislature. Tobacco, textiles and furniture built it, and banking and research have been rebuilding it since. It gave the world the first powered flight and a serious argument about barbecue, which here means whole hog with vinegar. Go for the Blue Ridge Parkway, and out to Ocracoke, which is reachable only by ferry and better for it.
First in flight, and Pepsi was invented in a New Bern drugstore.
