Mississippi is where American music largely comes from. The Delta produced the blues, which produced rock and roll, and the state has a literary tradition to match in Faulkner and Welty and Wright. It is also the poorest state by most measures, and its history with race is the country's history at its least edited. Go for the Blues Trail markers, which are placed where things actually happened, and the Gulf Coast, which is quieter and better than the reputation.
The blues started here, and so did the teddy bear.
