Maine is ninety per cent forest and mostly empty, a state with a long working coast and an interior that is closer to Canada in every sense. Lobster is an industry and an identity. It became a state as part of the Missouri Compromise, admitted free to balance a slave state, which is a strange origin for somewhere so far from that argument. Go for Acadia at sunrise, the first place in the country the sun touches, and then keep driving north where almost nobody does.
Ninety per cent forest, the most heavily wooded state in the country.
