Massachusetts packs a lot of American firsts into a small area: the first subway, the first public park, the first college, and a revolution. It is now a state that runs on universities and hospitals, with a coastline that still fishes and a western half that is mountains and mill towns turned art towns. Go for the Freedom Trail if you have not, but the better day is the Berkshires in autumn, or a boat out of Provincetown to watch whales feed.
Opened the first subway in America in 1897, and people complained about it immediately.
