Louisiana is legally and culturally its own thing. It runs on civil law inherited from France, divides itself into parishes rather than counties, and holds a French and Spanish and African and Caribbean inheritance that never got flattened. New Orleans gets the attention, and deserves it, but Cajun country to the west is the deeper story. Go for the food, which is the best argument the state makes, and get out on the water in the Atchafalaya, the largest swamp in the country.
The only state with parishes instead of counties, and civil law instead of common law.
