The place
Joined 1890 · 43rd state · Not yet a state in the Civil War · Mountain, panhandle Pacific time
Idaho is two places bolted together, a panhandle that faces Spokane and the Pacific Northwest and a southern plain that faces Utah and the Mountain West, with a wilderness in between so large it has no roads through it. Potatoes are the joke and the truth, about a third of the national crop. Go for the Sawtooths, which look drawn by somebody exaggerating, and float the Salmon River, which the maps used to call the River of No Return because boats could go down it and not back up.
Grows about a third of every potato in the country.
