Iowa is black soil, some of the most productive farmland on the planet, and a political culture shaped by going first. Candidates spend years in its diners, which makes its voters unusually practised at being asked. Behind the corn is a quieter state of Czech and Dutch settlements, river bluffs along the Mississippi, and a heavy metal scene that produced Slipknot. Go in autumn for the Loess Hills in the west, a landform this good found in only one other place on earth.
Votes first, and has done since 1972, which is why candidates know its diners by name.
