Washington is a company town where the company is the federal government, and everything else about it grew in the gaps. It has more people than Wyoming or Vermont and no voting member of Congress, a fact residents put on their licence plates. Beneath the monumental core is a genuine city, one that invented go-go music and hardcore punk in the same decade. Go for the museums, which are free and enormous, but walk east to H Street or Anacostia to see the place people actually live in.
