California is really several countries that share a legislature: the agricultural Central Valley that grows a startling share of the country's food, the coastal cities that export culture and software, and the mountain and desert interior that most visitors never see. It has been booming and busting since 1849 and treats both as normal. Go for the coast road and the redwoods, which are the tallest living things there are, but the underrated trip is the eastern Sierra in autumn, when the aspens turn and the tourists have gone.
On its own it would be one of the largest economies on the planet.
