Alaska is not a big version of anywhere else. It has more coastline than the rest of the country combined, three million lakes, and about one road for every hundred miles of wilderness, so most of it is reached by boat or float plane or not at all. The oil dividend pays residents to live there and the winter dares them to. Go for Denali and the Kenai Fjords, but the thing people underestimate is the light: summer days that never properly end, and a January where the sun clears the horizon for a few hours and then gives up.
More coastline than all forty-nine other states combined.
